May 03 – ERG Marks World Press Freedom Day
‘Since 1991 and the Windhoek Declaration on media pluralism and independence, the 3rd of May each year has been designated by the U.N. as 'World Press Freedom Day,’ the Equality Rights Group said in the opening of a brief communiqué on the subject.
‘ERG believes it is time for us to mark it here in Gibraltar, too, and we intend to do so annually. We invite media and political parties to similarly do so henceforth.
‘The work of media professionals is all too often taken for granted, but without them the public’s interest and right to information in a democratic society cannot be delivered. We repeat what we’ve been saying for several years now: we believe that Gibraltar should formally institute recognitions for outstanding work in this field in the service of this community,’ the statement ended.
