Active Travel Month Launches This September To Promote Healthier, Greener Lifestyles In Gibraltar

The ‘Active Travel Month’ (ATM) initiative launches this September as a community-driven effort to  promote the benefits of walking and cycling, while reducing traffic congestion and vehicle  dependency in Gibraltar.

A statement from OTWO follows below:

This collaborative campaign is organised by the Sustainable Transport Action Group (STAG), OTWO  Magazine, and the Netball World Youth Cup 2025 Local Organising Committee, uniting to encourage  residents and visitors to adopt more sustainable and active means of travel throughout the month.

We are also delighted to announce that AMA Group is the official sponsor for the month’s campaign,  supporting our mission to promote healthier, greener lifestyles across the community.

In the lead-up to ATM, we will be working with various organisations and companies to coordinate a  series of workshops and training sessions designed to build confidence in cycling and walking. Open  to all ages and abilities, these sessions will equip both adults and children with practical skills to  navigate Gibraltar’s roads safely and responsibly. The workshops will also highlight the local  importance and impact of effective traffic management.

In addition, a local Strava challenge will be launched for the month of September, encouraging  participants to track their kilometres by walking, running, or cycling. Everyone is welcome to join the  challenge, and the participant who logs the most kilometres will receive a special Active Travel  goodie bag as a reward for their commitment to healthy, sustainable travel.

As part of the month’s community engagement, two flag days will be held in Gibraltar’s town centre  to raise awareness about the importance of active travel in reducing traffic, improving public health,  and addressing vehicle dependency. The public will also be encouraged to take part in a local  transport questionnaire to help identify travel habits and explore ways to support a more sustainable  transport network.

Throughout all Active Travel Month events in September, including pop-up activities and a special  raffle, funds will be raised in support of both the Cardiac Association and the Gibraltar Diabetes  Charity, with all proceeds equally shared between the two. The raffle will feature a Brompton bicycle  as the top prize, along with several other exciting prizes to be won.

Companies, schools, and community organisations are encouraged to participate in ‘Active Travel  Month’ by hosting events, providing resources, or simply by taking part. It’s an opportunity to make a  tangible difference to the health and environment of Gibraltar.
