Unite the Union says it is deeply saddened to hear of the tragic death of a dedicated seafarer and have highlighted the dangers faced by workers at sea.
A statement from Unite the Union follows below:
Unite the Union is deeply saddened to hear of the tragic death of a dedicated seafarer, who lost his life in a workplace accident, aboard Gibraltar-flagged bunker barge MT Nisyros, in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters.
This devastating incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by workers at sea and the critical importance of robust health and safety measures in the maritime industry.
Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this extremely difficult time. Unite will be engaging with colleague Union ITF and calls for a comprehensive inquiry by the relevant authorities.
Unite’s Christian Duo said: Unite is urging for the Gibraltar Maritime Administration & Gibraltar Port Authority to act swiftly, in investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and to publish their findings without delay. In the meantime we will be engaging with the ITF, to offer any support necessary.
