36th Annual Painting Competition Exhibition Of Entries And Winners

The Gibraltar Heritage Trust has announced the winners of it’s 36th Annual Painting Competition which was held on 10th May at Witham’s Cemetery.

A statement from the Gibraltar Heritage Trust follows below:

The Gibraltar Heritage Trust held its 36th Annual Painting Competition on Saturday 10th May at Witham’s Cemetery, and is pleased to announce the winners. We were delighted to welcome families to the competition this year as well as returning artists who had not entered for some years. Participants had the opportunity to paint a view or feature an element of the cemetery, including the historic graves, the greenery or the interior/exterior makeup of the cottage.

We are also celebrating 10 years since restoration work began at the site by dedicated volunteers, and we were proud to able to invite artists into this recovered historic cemetery which had lain derelict for decades. Artists have captured the serenity, sombreness, beauty, and historic setting of the cemetery in their paintings, thus highlighting the hard work that has been achieved to bring this site back to life. The site was also open to members of the public with refreshments available inside our cottage area and organised tours inside the cemetery as part of Heritage Week.

Our judges had the difficult task of choosing winners from a high calibre of entries. We received entries in three categories this year; Children aged between 7 & 10, Juniors aged 11 to 17 and Adults 18 & over.

The Trust would like to thank the judges Karl Ullger, Chris-Anne Alcantara, and Leslie Gaduzo.

All entries were painted live on location between 09:00am and 17:00pm.

Below are the results and prizes for this year’s winners.

The first prize in the junior category of £250, with a shield in memory of William Serfaty, was sponsored by the Gibraltar Rotary Club.

The David Gladstone Prize for most promising artist was sponsored by Antonia Gladstone.

The prizes were presented by Minister for Heritage, The Hon Dr. John Cortes and Chairman of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust, Ian Balestrino, at the exhibition opening on 29th May.

All entries are on display in the last vault in GEMA Gallery from Friday 30th May to Friday 13th June, during GEMA opening hours (Summer hours begin 9th June from 10am to 3pm)

We will also open the gallery Saturday 31st May and Saturday 7th June, 10am – 1pm.
