Youth Clubs Participate in Drugs Awareness Workshops

Young people aged 12 to 18 from four local Youth Clubs have successfully completed a series of drugs awareness workshops designed to educate them on the underlying reasons behind substance use and the impact of drugs within the community.

This initiative was launched by the Minister with responsibility for Drugs Rehabilitation, Christian Santos, and originated from the Drugs Advisory Council as part of wider efforts to support preventative and educational approaches to substance misuse. This initiative also forms part of the Youth Strategy.

Led by former Drug Strategy Coordinator, John Montegriffo, the workshops provided a safe and interactive environment for participants to engage in meaningful discussions about drug use. Topics included the influence of peer pressure, stress, and curiosity, as well as the identification of commonly used substances in the local area and the risks associated with their use.

The workshops emphasise the importance of community-based education in equipping young people with the knowledge and tools necessary to make informed and responsible decisions about substance use. By promoting open dialogue and offering accurate information, the programme seeks to empower participants to take ownership of their choices and wellbeing.

The Minister for Youth and with responsibility for Drugs Rehabilitation, Christian Santos, said: “Educating our young people about the realities and risks of substance use is a vital step in building a healthier, more informed community. This initiative reflects our commitment to early intervention and prevention. I commend all the youth clubs involved for engaging so openly and thoughtfully in these workshops. Empowering our youth with knowledge and support is one of the most effective tools we have in the fight against drug misuse.”
