Stephen Hermida Wins ‘Discovering Our People’

Gibraltarian Photographer Stephen Hermida is the winner of the ‘Discovering Our People’ competition, with a photograph depicting local personality Johnny Bugeja.

‘Discovering Our People’, organised by Gibraltar Cultural Services on behalf of the Ministries for Culture and Tourism, is designed to celebrate the vibrant and diverse community of Gibraltar. Its aim is to explore interesting stories of Gibraltarians from all walks of life, uncovering the stories that often go unheard.
The competition will help foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the individuals who contribute to Gibraltar’s rich cultural tapestry. Stephen Hermida’s photograph showcases the spirit of Gibraltar, shedding light on a unique narrative; Johnny Bugeja, an individual who as a photographer has been at the heart of capturing many important moments in Gibraltar’s history over many years. In his own words, Stephen describes Johnny Bugeja as:
John Bugeja: Capturing Gibraltar’s History Through the Lens
John Bugeja has been a pivotal figure in Gibraltar’s journalism landscape for over three decades as the chief photographer of the Gibraltar Chronicle. With a career spanning more than 30 years, John has documented the modern history of Gibraltar through his powerful and evocative photographs, capturing countlessmomentsthat have shaped the community. From political milestones and cultural events to daily life in the region, his work has served as a visual archive of Gibraltar’s evolution.
John’s photographs have not only been featured extensively in the Gibraltar Chronicle but have also appeared in numerous international newspapers and publications.His keen eye for detail and ability to tell stories through his images have made his work recognisable far beyond the borders of Gibraltar.
Johnny, as he is affectionately known by many, is a well-known and beloved local personality. His approachable demeanour and dedication to his craft have earned him a place in the hearts of the people of Gibraltar. Over the years, he has become an integral part of the community, often seen with his camera in hand, ready to capture the next defining moment in Gibraltar’s story.
Through his lens, John Bugeja has not only documented history but has also contributed to shaping the visual memory of a nation. His enduring legacy is one of passion, commitment, and an unerring eye for the moments that matter.
Stephen will now work with the Ministry of Culture and Visit Gibraltar to continue this project and showcase some of the many stories of our community members.

‘Johnny Bugeja has spent decades capturing the story of our people through his lens, and it is only fitting that he now becomes the subject of such a powerful tribute. ‘Discovering Our People’ is about recognising and celebrating our shared identity, and this winning photograph does just that with heart, respect and artistic excellence.’
