Disability Pride Month

08 August 2025
Disability Pride Month

Last week the Disability Flag was flying high at the Frontier, the Mayor’s Parlour and outside St Bernard’s Hospital to mark the end of Disability Pride Month.

A statement from the Government follows below:

Disability Pride month is celebrated every July across the world to honour the history, achievements and experiences of persons with disabilities. It is a time for the disability community to embrace their identities and challenge negative stereotypes.

It is commemorated in July because it marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act, the landmark legislation that broke down barriers to inclusion in society in 1990.

The Disability Flag represents the various experiences and needs within the disabled community. It has coloured stripes and each stripe represents an area of disability:

Red: physical impairments and conditions

Gold: neurodiversity

White: non-visible and undiagnosed impairments and conditions

Blue: emotional and psychiatric conditions

Green: Hearing impaired, Vision impaired and all other sensory impairments and conditions The charcoal background represents people in the community who have experienced ableism.

Ableism is discrimination of persons with disabilities based on the belief that typical abilities are superior and persons with disabilities are inferior. This is a beliefthat needs to be challenged so that society begins to view the positive attributes and talents that persons with disabilities have.

The Supported Needs and Disability Office in the Ministry of Equality are here to support persons with disabilities and their families. If anyone requires any support, please reach out to them on:
