GEMA Gallery 10th Anniversary Celebrations

Gibraltar Cultural Services, on behalf of the Ministry for Culture, have announced a special programme of events to mark the 10th Anniversary celebrations of GEMA Gallery, The Gibraltar Exhibitions of Modern Art, at Montagu Bastion.
A statement from GCS follows below:
The celebrations will begin on 1st October 2025 with a creative takeover by Kitchen Studios, returning to the space where they first held an open studio session. Over a three-month period, Kitchen Studios will bring their distinctive style and artistic approach to GEMA, presenting an exciting line-up of workshops, exhibitions, and performances.
This initiative reflects GCS’s ongoing vision to provide meaningful opportunities for creatives, while fostering greater community engagement in one of Gibraltar’s unique and historic cultural settings. GEMA was launched as a modern art facility in 2015 and aims to showcase the more modern artworks in The Government’s Art Collection including photography, sculpture and video installations. Since its inception it has featured a variety of exhibitions as well as theatre and performance-based productions, music recordings, book launches, workshops, storytelling and much more.
In January 2026, GEMA Gallery will reopen with a refreshed curation showcasing paintings, audio visual installations and other works. The opening month will feature an interactive launch event with live performances, alongside a late-night opening with a DJ and life drawing session, giving audiences a chance to experience the gallery in new and exciting ways.
In April 2026, GEMA will introduce an ‘Artist Corner’, providing creatives with the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work within one of the gallery’s historic vaults. The space will also be used to host workshops and encourage direct engagement between artists and the public. With its stone walls and old gun embrasures the venue continues to impress visitors creating a unique environment from which to showcase Gibraltar’s modern art.
Minister for Equality, Employment, Culture and Tourism, the Hon Christian Santos GMD MP, said: “Given its singular setting, GEMA Gallery continues to be a brilliant space to exhibit modern art and be used as a performance space for a myriad of different offerings. I am excited to see the new curation and the different ways the vaults will be utilised by various artistic entities to use the space to its full potential.”
