Government Responds to GSD Statement on McGrail Inquiry Comments

The Government says it notes the latest statement by the GSD, and the Leader of the Opposition, in particular where he “remarkably suggests” that Parliament is not the right place to debate important matters.
A statement continued: “It is extraordinary for the Opposition to criticise the Chief Minister for simply recognising that Parliament is the proper forum for discussion on any issue of public interest, including matters arising from the McGrail Inquiry once it has reported.
“The Government notes that Mr Azopardi has repeatedly stated his intention to make public comment on the Inquiry when it concludes, yet it appears to want to prevent the Government and the Chief Minister from doing exactly the same.”
The Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, said:
“It is remarkable that the Leader of the Opposition seems to think Parliament is not the right place to debate important issues.
“Mr Azopardi has said he will have plenty to say about the McGrail Inquiry once the Chairman has reported his findings, but he seems to want to gag me from doing the same.
“That is typical GSD hypocrisy.
“The Opposition need to understand that what is good for the goose is good for the gander and they must stop running scared from arguments that don’t fit their anti-GSLP narrative.
“When the time comes, I look forward to whatever Mr Azopardi has to say and to responding to him.”
