Gibtaku: Traces of the Past and Present is a collaborative cross-border art project taking place on Wednesday 18 March 2026, celebrating Gibraltar’s evolving relationship with Europe and its future integration into the Schengen area.
Curated by Bruto Pomeroy and led by artists Barbara Shunyi (Spain) and Alan Perez (Gibraltar), the project reimagines the Gibraltar - Spain frontier as a space of connection rather than division. Drawing on the Japanese printing technique Gyotaku, artists and students will create frottage and print works directly from the frontier fence, preserving its physical traces as a record of change.
The initiative brings together students from Gibraltar, Cadiz and La Línea, alongside the wider community, who are invited to contribute personal memories of the frontier. These materials will form part of a multi-sensory Installation featuring sculptural paper works, sound, and film. People can record their memories at the Fine Arts Gallery at Casemates on the day, or send their recollections on email to [email protected]
The resulting artworks will be exhibited in Gibraltar and Spain, highlighting shared histories and future possibilities across borders.
Gibtaku is both a documentation and a transformationan artistic gesture of unity, memory, and hope at a pivotal moment for Gibraltar and the region.
