Gibraltar Horticultural Society Announces Several New Community Driven Initiatives

The Gibraltar Horticultural Society have announced a series of community-driven environmental initiatives taking place in May 2026, as part of its Earth Day celebrations and the United Nations International Day for Biological Diversity.

A statement from the Gibraltar Horticultural Society follows below:

The Gibraltar Horticultural Society (GHS) is proud to announce a series of community-driven environmental initiatives taking place in May 2026, as part of its continued commitment to Earth Day celebrations and the United Nations International Day for Biological Diversity 2026.

Acting locally for global impact” is the theme of the 2026 edition of the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB)

 Community Greening at Nuffield Pool

On Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th May, GHS will lead a volunteer planting initiative at the Nuffield Pool, transforming the area with the creation of a succulent bed in three large planters.

This initiative forms part of the wider Eco Festival programme, bringing together volunteers, local organisations, and businesses to actively contribute to greening Gibraltar.

A team of corporate volunteers will be joining GHS to help plant and prepare the area, showcasing the power of community collaboration in enhancing shared public spaces. The project aims not only to beautify the location but also to promote sustainable planting solutions suited to Gibraltar’s climate.

“Plant a Seed Day” – Community Fundraising Event

Continuing these celebrations, GHS will host a “Plant a Seed Day” on Saturday 23rd May, with official permission granted by the Charity Commission.

The event will take place at two locations:

  • The Piazza
  • Outside Morrisons

Families and members of the public will be invited to:

  • Plant seeds in  pots to take home
  • Learn about the importance of growing plants and biodiversity
  • Engage in hands-on activities promoting greener lifestyles

As part of the day, GHS will also be holding a raffle with two hampers, with proceeds going towards the development of the GHS Hub and Community Gardens project—a long-term initiative aimed at creating a central green space for education, wellbeing, and community engagement in Gibraltar.

A Growing Movement for a Greener Gibraltar

These initiatives reflect GHS’s ongoing mission to:

  • Encourage community participation in environmental action
  • Promote biodiversity and sustainable urban greening
  • Inspire future generations to care for their environment

By linking local action with global environmental awareness days, GHS continues to highlight the importance of collective responsibility in protecting and enhancing our natural surroundings.

Members of the public, volunteers, and organisations are warmly encouraged to take part and support these initiatives.
