Important Notice To Government Housing Tenants - Holiday Absences And Property Safety

The Housing Department is issuing an important reminder to all Government Housing tenants regarding the process to follow whenever they will be away from their residence, including during long weekends, holidays, or any extended period of absence.
A statement from the Government follows below:
This reminder follows a significant number of water related incidents over the recent long weekend. The Department responded to 15 separate water related leaks in Government housing properties.
To help prevent similar incidents and minimise damage, all tenants are advised to leave a spare key with a neighbour or next of kin.
Leaving a set of keys with a trusted individual will enable swift access to the property should an emergency arise, helping to reduce the risk of extensive damage and inconvenience to neighbouring residents.
Before leaving their residence, tenants are also strongly advised to:
• Switch off the fresh water supply to the flat.
• Switch off the saltwater supply to the flat.
• Turn off the electrical supply to the water heater.
These simple measures can significantly reduce the risk of leaks, flooding, and water damage while properties are unoccupied.
The Housing Department appreciates the cooperation of all tenants in helping to protect their homes, neighbouring properties, and the wider Government housing community.
