Deputy Chief Minister Welcomes Lord Swire And Highlights Gibraltar’s Growing Commonwealth Links

The Government recently welcomed Lord Hugo Swire to Gibraltar to mark the continuing partnership between Gibraltar and the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council.
A statement from the Government follows below:
The visit culminated in a reception hosted by Deputy Mayor Andrea Simpson at the City Hall. Addressing the reception, Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia, who is also responsible for Commonwealth relations, said the visit reflected Gibraltar’s long-standing commitment to strengthening its links across the Commonwealth and underlined the importance of the Commonwealth as a network for trade, investment and international cooperation.
Dr Garcia highlighted the significance of the establishment of a CWEIC presence in Gibraltar, describing it as an important step in creating new opportunities for local businesses and strengthening economic ties with Commonwealth partners. He said the Commonwealth offered Gibraltar access to a diverse network of economies built on shared values, the English language and common law, providing a strong foundation for future growth.
The Deputy Chief Minister also noted the valuable role played by CWEIC in bringing together governments, businesses and investors across the Commonwealth, helping to turn relationships into practical economic opportunities.
During his address, Dr Garcia welcomed Lord Swire’s visit and paid tribute to his experience in public life and international affairs, as well as his continued support for Gibraltar and its engagement with the Commonwealth.
He said Gibraltar was well placed to contribute to the Commonwealth through its internationally recognised strengths in financial services, digital technologies, online gaming and maritime services. He added that the new UK-EU treaty would create further opportunities to deepen international partnerships.
The reception brought together representatives from government, business and the wider community to celebrate Gibraltar’s growing role within the Commonwealth and the strong relationship that has developed with CWEIC.
The Deputy Chief Minister, the Hon Dr Joseph Garcia, said: "The Commonwealth continues to offer Gibraltar valuable opportunities to build partnerships, strengthen economic ties and expand our international reach. We are grateful for the support and friendship shown by Lord Swire and CWEIC, and we look forward to working together to build on these relationships in the years ahead."
