Mar 21 - Earth Hour 2013
Celebrating Earth Hour once again this Saturday, Gibraltar is set to plunge the Rock into Darkness at 8:30pm in order to save energy and promote awareness of electrical consumption. The idea for the event was coined in 2007 by WWF and The Sydney Morning Herald. In order to participate, individuals must turn off all lights in their home or business for one hour.
In 2009, the Scouts from the 1st/4th group and the Environmental Safety Group organised events and brought awareness to the campaign, and the Gibraltar flag has officially been participating since 2011. Attracting international media attention in doing so.
Earth Hour 2012 global campaign was the biggest since the inaugural hour in 2007, and this year the Gibraltar Government are once more going beyond the hour as the external lights on the Moorish Castle and the North Face of Gibraltar will be switched off for the whole weekend.
Earth Hour Gibraltar are asking those who are taking part to post photographs or videos of what they are doing during Earth Hour to their twitter feed www.twitter.com/earthhourgib or to their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/EarthHourOceanVillageGibraltar
