May 07 - Gibraltar Hosts EU Project Peer Review on Climate Change

dr cortesMinister for Health and the Environment, Dr. John Cortes this morning announced that Gibraltar has been chosen to host the second peer review visit for the EU Cities Adapt Project, which aims to provide capacity building and assistance in the development and implementation of an adaptation strategy to deal with the predicted impacts of climate change.

The visit is to be carried out over the next couple of days and includes a number of representatives from other participating cities, including Barcelona, Zadar, Rotterdam and Arcadis. Project partners ICLEI and Ricardo-AEA are also attending.

During their time here, delegates will learn of Gibraltar’s work on climate change adaptation so far. Water scarcity is one of the projected impacts of climate change in many Mediterranean cities and the group will have the opportunity to visit the facilities at AquaGib, including the reverse osmosis plant and the water reservoirs within the Rock. They will also visit the Port to see the area affected by the 2008 storm and learn about the work done to reinforce the area and make it better able to cope with future extreme weather events.

Speaking at this morning’s introduction, Dr. Cortes noted that the Government wants to play their part and show the delegates what’s been done in the past and what their plans are for the future, with regards to climate change. Her added that the spirit of this exercise is to learn from each other about these very important matters related to climate change.
