May 15 - Museum Open Day 2013
On Saturday 18th May, between 10am and 6pm, the Gibraltar Museum will once again join museums all over the world in marking International Museums Day, by holding its own Museum Open Day.
The international theme this year is “Museums (Memory + Creativity) = Social Change” and we will explore how different cultures that have lived in Gibraltar have created and adapted to changes.
The large collection of authentic ceramics which are on display in the museum, and some of which have been crafted in Gibraltar, will illustrate creativity over the ages and there will be a hands-on workshop where we will encourage visitors to create something of their own.
The ever-popular fire making demonstration will show us how people one of humanity’s first inventions – how to make fire – was adapted by different cultures and we will be able to see the effort that it took to make fire, starting with just a tiny ember.
Other activities will include a crafts station where visitors will be able to make their own ‘memory box’ and this year there will be two Treasure Hunts – a fun way for the family to explore our museum and our heritage.
