May 22 - Small Boat Marina Project to 'Give the People Back the Waterfront'

marinaAs part of another of the Government’s flagship projects, Minister Licudi today announced that the 700-berth small boat marina project, as promised in the GSLP-Liberals’ manifesto, will be constructed in the Mid-Harbour area by May 2015. Included into the plan is a caisson vertical wall design wharf ,which will provide berthing and facilities for super yachts.

The project will include 400 six metre and 300 eight metre finger pontoon berths and will be secured by electrical and water points and CCTV cameras. The scheme came about as a result of discussions between an Inter-ministerial Committee made up of Environment Minister, Dr. John Cortes, Tourism Minister Neil Costa, and Justice Minister Gilbert Licudi, with a substantial input for project manager Chris Riddell.

Minister Licudi insisted, during a press call on the matter, that a number of studies had been commissioned, including a geotechnical survey to determine the composition and characteristics of the seabed where the wharf will be constructed. An Environmental Impact study had also been carried out.

Before works commence, the proposal will be tabled at a Development and Planning Commission meeting. The Operation will include a road for two-way traffic and a roundabout at the end of the promenade; public walkways will be included in an attempt to ‘give the people back the waterfront’.

Dr. Cortes claimed that as individuals have mentioned that Gibraltar is losing seafront with the introduction of the Sunborn floating hotel, this venture will open up a huge area of seafront which has never been available, without any negative environmental impact.

Minister Licudi adamantly stated that consultations had been take up with surrounding stakeholders within the area, including the Yacht Club, the Mediterranean Rowing club and the residents of Mid-Harbours Estate.
