Jun 10 - Friends of Gibraltar Society on the Rock
This morning, a brunch was hosted at the Mayor's Parlour for the Friends of Gibraltar Society, as well as the Heritage Trust. The Friends of Gibraltar is a registered charity made up of many individuals who hold links with Gibraltar, be it through business, marriage, or having spent a stint living on the Rock.
His Worship the Mayor presented recently appointed Mayor of the Test Valley Borough Council, Mrs. Janet Whiteley with a Gibraltar Crystal Paper weight. On behalf of the Society, Mayor Whitely handed Mayor Tony Lima one of their ties.
Speaking to the crowd, His Worship paid tribute to the work carried out by the Heritage Trust, noting that it is valued by everybody. He added that all of us in Gibraltar have a responsibility to ensure that our unique and historic heritage is respected and wherever possible, reserved. The Mayor insisted that over the years the Trust has been successful in creating a public awareness on the importance and significance of what it is trying to achieve.
The Friends of Gibraltar’s visit to the Rock this week has been organised in conjunction with the Heritage Trust and includes a spectrum of activities, including a reception with the Commander of British Forces at the Tower, a short visit to the former Gibraltar Chronicle printing works and the inauguration ceremony of Harding’s Battery gun at Europa Point, which will also be attended by His Excellency the Governor.
Speaking to YGTV, Mayor Whiteley noted that the society would be hosting an annual seminar and dinner on the 2nd November at the Wessex Hotel in Winchester.
