Aug 28 - Record Number of Entrants for Cardboard Boat Race
Last weekend played host to the fifth edition of Ocean Village’s Cardboard Boat Race. Well over £1,000 was raised on the day, with proceeds set to go to a number of Gibraltar sports Associations to aid junior development, as well as the GBC Open Day fund.
Winner of both the Adult and Junior race was O’Reilly’s with best Fancy Dress awarded to the JP Haulage Romans. Best Boat was awarded to the RAF Titanic and the Best Titanic Sinking was won by Life of Pi. Miss Gibraltar 2013 Maroua Kharbouch presented participants with their prizes.
The event saw 14 boats partake in the race, with Channel 5 once again filming for the second season of Gibraltar: Britain in the Sun. Commentary for the event was provided by Zooney, once again.
Commenting on the race, Ocean Village Spokesperson Sarah Lamplough noted that this year there were almost double the entries of last year. She added, ‘knowing that the cameras were on them, extra effort clearly went into boat building this year with the RAF Junior vessel ‘Titanic’ taking a full five days to construct – although ‘Titanic’ was a bit of a misnomer as it lasted the course unscathed to come third. We also had really authentic Junior and Adult versions of a VW camper van constructed by Interbuild – making fifth and second places in their respective races. The sun shone brightly on a fantastic afternoon of friendly competition - particularly useful for the drenched crews of the four ‘sinkers’.’
