Oct 04 - Unite Meets with Union Members Over Barclays Shutdown
With Barclays’ recent news of a retail shutdown in Gibraltar a selection of meetings has been held between staff and members of Unite the Union. Representative for the Union, Christian Duo today thanked Chief Minister Fabian Picardo for meeting with a Unite delegation at such short notice. He added that the meetings proved ‘extremely positive’ with both parties agreeing to work in partnership to try and save jobs and secure Gibraltar’s community retail banking needs.
Mr. Duo noted that the Union was pleased to have put in place a temporary secondment of a Senior Barclays Unite Rep from the UK (Mark Swan) together with a local Official offering the resources to effectively deliver the necessary support to Unite’s members.
The Union held a general meeting on Wednesday evening, during which they informed members of details regarding the consultation process. Commenting on the meeting, Christian Due explained, ‘It was also a platform for members to ask questions, some of which we were unable to answer, however we will be relaying them back following engagement with management. Although strongly opposed to Barclays' announcement we continue to hold fluid lines of communication with Management for the benefit of our members. Another general Meeting of Unite members is planned for next Tuesday at 5pm at Regal House.’
