The Ministry for Tourism has erected new pedestrian signposts to assist tourists walking up and down the Upper Town Area. It follows reports of visitors taking wrong turnings while trying to reach the Upper Rock nature reserve and getting stranded in Moorish Castle Estate instead.

Following a lengthy process of consultation and engagement with the Highways and Technical Services Departments, the first signs have gone up this week.

The problem was first observed and notified to officials by a tenant in the Castle Street area who habitually spotted tourists who had strayed off the intended route.

The Minister for Tourism, Neil Costa, welcomed the initiative and said it would improve pedestrian access to the Upper Rock, especially for visitors to Gibraltar.

A second phase is envisaged in which traffic signs will be erected for the benefit of motorists driving in the area.

Mr Costa said: “The new signs are of excellent benefit to tourists and residents alike. The Ministry for Tourism will continue in its endeavour to facilitate access to our tourist sites in the most effective manner. I would also like to thank James Nunez who drew our attention to the problem which, hopefully, has now been resolved.”
