Jan 31 - Over 500 Sign Petition Against Frontier Car Park Closure

newsFollowing a recent Government announcement to shut the car park opposite the former air terminal building, creator of the petition against the move, Sonia McKay has written to the Deputy Chief Minister to put across the issues that many individuals who often travel into Spain, will have nowhere to leave their vehicles.

In her letter, which includes a written format of her petition, signed by over 500 people who all claim to use the car park regularly, Sonia writes, ‘ should this  car [ark be closed for public use, as envisages, we can foresee massive parking problems around the immediate vicinity of the frontier. Currently there is only a very limited allocated area close to the border for motorcycles.’ She goes on to say that the Western Beach car park, which the Government claimed could fill the demand for parking spaces in the area, is not as secure and no where near big enough to cater for the vast amount of users, especially during the summer season. She adds that the Devil’s Tower Road car park is more expensive that the old airport car park and is ‘not very practical when you have to cross the run-way by foot, taking into consideration that users consist of senior citizens, parents with young children and persons with disabilities’.

Sonia also questions the Deputy Chief Minister on what users of the car park are meant to do before the proposed multi-storey car park to be built on the site of the former air terminal is completed. She suggests that the Government keeps the current car park open until the multi storey project is completed and then relocate the coach park to a more suitable area that will not disrupt Gibraltar citizens.
