Sep 15 - Stamp Commemorates 100 Years of Sea Scouts in Gibraltar
In conjunction with the Gibraltar Philatelic Bureau, the Government of Gibraltar has issued a set of two postage stamps commemorating the 100 Years of the Gibraltar Sea Scouts, the only group to be recognized by the Admiralty, outside of the UK.
The first reference to the Gibraltar Sea Scouts on record is found in a letter, dated 4th July 1914 from Major O.H. Pedley, the Scout Commissioner for Gibraltar, to the Secretary of the Boy Scouts Association in which he informs him that No. 3 and No. 4 Troop ‘are in the process of formation’ and that Gibraltar would probably have some Sea Scouts in the near future’. Less than a year later 5th Gibraltar Sea Scouts was raised with Mr. Radcliffe, RN, as its Scoutmaster.
The stamps were officially released by the Chief Minister, the Hon Fabian Picardo QC MP, in the presence of the Minister for Postal Services the Hon Minister Steven Linares and past and present leaders and members of the Gibraltar Sea Scouts at a reception commemorating the centennial anniversary.
The stamps and related philatelic products are now available for purchase from the Philatelic Shop outside the Main Post Office and are also available to order online on www.gibraltar-stamps.com.
