Dec 23 - Ocean Village Announces New Development Amidst Protests of 'Overbuilding'

ocean village Ocean Village this week revealed plans to develop new superyacht berths and short-stay rental apartments, on top of the Marina Bay marina. 126 waterside apartments are planned in an effort to ‘address a local need for short-stay and rental accommodation and make the provision of Superyacht berthing more economically viable,’ claimed a spokesperson for Ocean Village.

The apartments will make up three, four and five storey units that will have waterways flowing between them. Eco friendly cross-laminated timber is being considered for the development. The development will be stilt-supported, and the area is set to be pedestrianized ‘with pier-side trees every five metres and atmospheric lighting’. The existing pedestrian access will also be significantly extended to create a tree-lined promenade around half a kilometre long with a seating-area ‘mirador’ at the end.

In protest of the scheme, that was put before the Development and Planning Commission recently, a group, calling themselves ‘Save Marina Bay’ are urging the public to put across their views on the development. They claim that the announcement and submissions to planning of the previously rejected proposal have been instigated ‘so as to minimise any possible review or objections by the general public’, with many more concerned about preparing for the Christmas period.

Tomorrow is the last date for public comments to be submitted. Thr group claims that the development ‘will have a profound and permanent effect on all the people who live in Gibraltar and the many families that come to visit Ocean Village and the marina.’ They add that the area will become congested, and overbuilt.
