Jun 10 – Gibraltar’s Chess Team Bring Home Gold And Silver
Schoolchildren across Gibraltar’s first and middle schools brought home gold and silver in the National School’s Chess Team Championships held in Wales.
The competition was played over two days at the weekend, with Gibraltar's 'A' team competing in the major tournament and represented by Bishop Fitzgerald's qualifying team of Luis Thoppil, William Correa and Aryan Dhanwani, Cyryl Ratajczak - they were joined by Johan Mahtani from St Joseph's school to make the line up of an excellent team who played an outstanding tournament to bring home Silver.
Gibraltar's 'B' team who were represented by Kyle Agius from Sacred Heart, Anushree Jain from Loreto Convent and for the first time two young players from first schools, Adi Dhanwani from St Paul's and Dev Mahbubani from Governors Meadow were crowned winners of the U11 Plate Competition.
Sharon Whatley, President of The Gibraltar Chess Association, said: “Both teams played exceptionally well, were excellent ambassadors for Gibraltar and their results speak for themselves.
“Each and very players should be very proud of their achievement.”
