Call For Papers For Special Journal Issue On Gibraltarian Literature, Culture and Language

A call for papers has been issued for a special issue of the Complutense Journal of English Studies dedicated to the exploration of contemporary Gibraltarian literature, culture, and language.
Titled “Voices from the Rock: Gibraltarian Literature, Culture, and Language”, the journal will be edited by guest editors Elena Seoane (University of Vigo) and Rafael Vélez (University of Cádiz).
A statement issued by the guest editors continues: “As a space where diverse histories, linguistic hybridity, and transnational influences converge, Gibraltar presents a unique case study in identity formation, cultural negotiation, and literary innovation. From the blending of English, Spanish, and Llanito in everyday discourse to the emergence of a distinct literary tradition, Gibraltar’s evolving cultural landscape offers fertile ground for scholarly inquiry.
“This special issue seeks to bring together research that examines Gibraltarian literature, culture, and language through interdisciplinary and comparative perspectives. We welcome submissions that engage with contemporary writers, cultural productions, and linguistic shifts, as well as broader discussions on how Gibraltar’s complex cultural context informs artistic and linguistic expressions.”
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Contemporary Gibraltarian literature and its place in world literature
- Border politics and cultural expressions of belonging and exclusion
- Gibraltarian literature in postcolonial, Mediterranean and transnational contexts
- Comparative studies linking Gibraltar to other borderland cultures
- Language and identity: the role of Llanito in literature and society
- Code-mixing, code-switching and linguistic hybridity in Gibraltar
- Corpus-based studies of Gibraltar English and Llanito
The editors welcome full-length research articles (6,000–8,000 words, including abstracts, keywords, footnotes, and references) that contribute to expanding the scholarly conversation on Gibraltarian literature, culture, and language.
