Sep 25 - Cancer Relief's Biggest Coffee Morning A Big Success
Hundreds of people attended this year’s Gibraltar’s Biggest Coffee Morning hosted by the Cancer Relief team at Boyd’s in King's Bastion Leisure Centre today.
With a variety of refreshments, tea, coffee and cakes or sandwiches, there was something for everyone, all in aid of a good cause.
Marisa Desoiza, Chairperson for Cancer Relief, said that although in previous years the event has been hosted in different cafés across Gibraltar, the aim for this year’s event was to have more of a community spirit by hosting it in one place.
While people of all ages gathered to lend support to the charity, Marisa said: “We were a bit trepidatious at first, but wow it’s been amazing. The response has been amazing, and the generosity has been amazing.”
Cancer Relief is expanding, and while the Government of Gibraltar are funding the hospice, the costs for the day-to-day running of the day centre will continue to be from fund-raising from the community.
Marisa added: “I just wanted to clarify that the centre is for everyone, from diagnosis right through to treatment, to getting better and also for those who might not get better.”
The money raised from today’s event will go towards the cancer support clinic at the Cancer Relief centre. The charity offers a variety of services for those fighting cancer including day care services, respite care, cancer support clinic, complementary therapies, the ‘Head Smart’ and ‘pampering’ service, hospice at home service, nursing equipment loaning scheme, financial assistance scheme and a bereavement service.
While the exact fund-raising figure is not yet known, Marisa hopes that the £4 entry fee, together with raffle ticket sales, accessories and cake sales on the day will help towards raising an impressive amount for charity.
