Aug 25 - RGP Warning Following Spate Of Moped Thefts

The Royal Gibraltar Police is warning of a spate of moped thefts and attempted thefts that have occurred during the past 10 days in the north and west district areas.

Most of the vehicles targeted included MBK Boosters and Yamaha BW’s, and although most of these have been recovered by Police and/or their respective owners, some have yet to be recovered.

In connection with an ongoing Police investigation into these thefts, a local male and a Spanish male, both residents of Gibraltar, were arrested recently on suspicion of Theft and are currently on Police bail.

Depending on their make/model, mopeds are often easy to steal if not parked securely, and because opportunists and not professional thieves are responsible for most cases, the advice offered below will go a long way in preventing this type of crime:

· ALWAYS APPLY THE STEERING LOCK AND APPLY A SEPARATE CHAIN/CABLE LOCK. If possible, secure these to an immovable object such as a parking anchor, lamppost or even another moped/motorcycle.

· DON’T leave valuable possessions within the under-seat compartment or inside storage boxes. It takes very little effort to damage these types of locks.

· DON’T leave helmets hanging from/attached to external moped brackets/frame

· If going on holiday, in addition to removing the contents of your under- seat compartment/storage box, consider removing the battery.

· If your moped is always/mostly used in Gibraltar, consider keeping your vehicle’s documents at home – Police allow 5 days for you to produce these documents if required.

The public are encouraged to assist with current enquiries by reporting any suspicious behaviour to 20072500 (routine) or 199/112 in the event of an emergency, giving Place/Date/Time/Persons/Vehicles involved.
