Online Seminar To Discuss Origins and Development of Llanito

By YGTV Newsroom21 hours ago

An online seminar will discuss the origins and development of Llanito. Titled “Linguistic Diversity Under Threat: Global South and Global North Perspective,” the event is organised by Pedro Álvarez‑Mosquera, Director of the LinguaSOUTH Chair at the University of Salamanca.

The seminar, which takes place on the 25th September 2026 at 10:00 a.m. (Gibraltar time), will examine how linguistic diversity is increasingly under threat across both the Global South and the Global North.

Professor Elena Seoane (University of Vigo) will discuss the origins and development of Llanito in Gibraltar, tracing its emergence, key historical turning points, and the current situation of its speaker community while Professor Andy Chebanne (University of Botswana) will address the evolution of Khoisan languages in Botswana, focusing on the accelerated decline of minority languages—an erosion that is rarely a natural process.

The forum invites students and academics to reflect on both the similarities and the significant contrasts among endangered languages worldwide, offering an original perspective on the survival of very small minority languages today.

Attendance is free, but prior registration is required:
