The Musicians Association of Gibraltar has welcomed a new tax allowance for local musicians announced in the Chief Minister’s 2026 Budget speech.

A statement from MAG follows below:

The Musicians Association of Gibraltar (MAG) warmly welcomes today's Budget announcement by the Chief Minister, the Hon. Fabian Picardo KC MP, introducing a new tax allowance for musicians resident in Gibraltar who perform locally. The measure will also apply retrospectively from July 2019.

Today's announcement represents a significant milestone for Gibraltar's music community and marks the culmination of constructive engagement between the Government and MAG over many months.

For years, Gibraltar's musicians have contributed immeasurably to the cultural, social and economic life of our community. They perform at our national celebrations, festivals, restaurants, bars, hotels and public events, helping to create the vibrant atmosphere that residents enjoy and visitors remember. Behind every performance are countless hours of rehearsal, preparation, dedication and personal investment that often go unseen.

We are therefore delighted that the Government has recognised the value of Gibraltar's musicians and the important contribution they make to our community.

The Chief Minister's words today reflected precisely what musicians have always known: that culture matters, local talent matters, and music plays an important role in Gibraltar's identity and economy. The recognition of local performers through today's Budget sends a powerful message to both current and future generations of musicians.

The retrospective application of this measure to July 2019 is particularly welcome and demonstrates the Government's commitment to recognising the contribution musicians have made over recent years, including through some of the most challenging periods the entertainment industry has faced.

MAG would like to place on record its sincere thanks to the Chief Minister, the Government and all those involved in listening to the concerns of Gibraltar's music community and working collaboratively towards this important initiative.

This announcement is not simply about taxation. It is about recognising the value of music, supporting Gibraltar's creative community and acknowledging the role musicians play in enriching the lives of our people and enhancing our tourism and hospitality sectors.

As the representative body for Gibraltar's musicians, MAG remains committed to working closely with the Government and all stakeholders to continue strengthening opportunities for local artists and ensuring that Gibraltar's music scene continues to flourish.

Today is an important day for every musician on the Rock. We thank the Government for recognising our contribution and look forward to continuing to work together to build an even stronger future for music in Gibraltar.
