Jun 07 – Toyah Wilcox To Kick Off Gibraltar Music Week
Toyah Wilcox, whose career has spanned decades, will kick off Gibraltar Music Week which gets underway on Tuesday 29th of August. She will perform an “up close and personal” show with local band Jetstream.
A spokesperson said: “With no less than 13 Top-10 singles under her belt, Toyah is the perfect candidate to kick off what is going to be a busy week in Gibraltar.
“Toyah, aside from her success in music, is also quite an accomplished actress and has worked with Derek Jarman twice in the movies ‘Jubilee’ and ‘The Tempest’. It was her role as Miranda in ‘The Tempest’ that earned her a nomination as Best Newcomer at the Evening Standard Awards.
“Shortly after, her band gained critical success with their debut single ‘Victims of the Riddle’, which was #1 in the Independent Charts, and a six-track EP titled ‘Sheep Farming in Barnet’.
“It was her next album ‘Blue Meaning’ that became a Top-40 hit. Her hit singles ‘It's A Mystery’, ‘I Want to Be Free’ and ‘Brave New World’, as well as her platinum- selling albums ‘Anthem’ and ‘The Changeling’, cemented her as one of the most significant talents of the 1980s. She also won Best Female Singer at the British Rock & Pop Awards in 1982.
“More recently Toyah starred in the hit British film ‘Ahhhhhhhh!’ directed by Steve Oram and co-starring Julian Rhind-Tutt, Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt. Toyah also has a role in the British thriller ‘Extremis’ for which Toyah and Simon Darlow have co-written and produced the end credits song ‘Our Hearts Still Beat’. In ‘Extremis’
“Toyah plays the wife of a character played by Harvey Keitel, who is in the forthcoming ‘Lies We Tell’, directed by Mitu Misra and co-starring Gabriel Byrne. Toyah is also currently completing film roles as Francis Meynell in the period piece ‘Hound - The Life of the poet Francis Thompson’, a new film by Chris Ward.
“In the later part of 2017 Toyah will start shooting ‘To Be Someone’ based on a book of the same name, which continues the adventures and lives of many of the original characters from The Who’s ‘Quadrophenia’. Toyah will also shoot a role in British horror film ‘Swipe Right’, based on an internet dating app, and stars in another Steve Oram production entitled ‘Dregs’.
“To this day music runs through her veins and Toyah's summer concert diary is packed with festival performances and acoustic shows.
“Her transatlantic rock band Toyah & The Humans, featuring Bill Rieflin (King Crimson, R.E.M.) & Chris Wong, have released three albums. The most recent ‘Strange Tales’ was supported with US and UK concert dates and their track ‘Get In Your Car’ will be covered and released as a single by King Crimson in 2017.
“Toyah's most recent musical collaboration is vocals on the Dodson and Fogg track, ‘Drinking From The Gun’, which she also co-wrote.
“Toyah is married to King Crimson founder Robert Fripp.”
