Cultural Exchange With UK, ‘Traces of Humanity’, Expressions of Interest

Gibraltar Cultural Services on behalf of the Ministry for Culture invites artists to express an interest in an exciting cultural exchange with the UK themed ‘Traces of Humanity.’ This unique project will feature two events: the first in London in May 2026, followed by a second in Gibraltar in July 2026.
The theme, set by curator Philippa Beale, celebrates the Gorham’s Cave Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of global importance in understanding human evolution. The exhibition will pay tribute to the traces left by humanity, reflecting on self-knowledge, history and the everyday aspects of human existence. Philippa Beale is a British visual artist, sculptor and curator who has led on previous exhibitions in Gibraltar and hosted Gibraltar’s artists in London.
The selected artists will be encouraged to explore the theme in innovative ways, drawing inspiration from Gibraltar’s natural imagery, flora and fauna. Moving away from traditional depictions of people, portraits and landscapes, participants will be invited to present fresh perspectives that embody the spirit of ‘Traces of Humanity.’
Selected artists will be required to produce two artworks for the London exhibition, planned to take place at the Noho Gallery, West End London. The second event will showcase a joint exhibition of UK and Gibraltarian artists at the Gustavo Bacarisas Gallery in Casemates Square. The programme will include public and educational events, offering opportunities for social engagement and outreach to schools.
