Nov 19 - Françoise Atlan Celebrates Sephardic Culture At The Literary Festival
French singer Françoise Atlan celebrated Sephardic culture in a performance featuring poetry, words and song during a unique event as part of last weekend’s Gibunco Gibraltar Literary Festival at the Convent.
During the show entitled ‘Spirit of Granada’, she performed traditional Sephardic works in the Jewish-Spanish and Jewish-Moroccan languages of Ladino, Judezmo and Haketia.
Françoise - born into a Sephardic Jewish family in France and one of the best performers of Sephardic romance - explained the influence of Granada on world culture and spoke about the history of the Sephardic tradition and the expulsion of Sephardic Jews from Spain.
Granada was the last bastion of the Sephardic culture in Spain in 1492 and, throughout this event, Françoise invited listeners to join her in a poetic and musical journey through the religions and traditions of Andalusia.
After her participation in the Literary Festival, Françoise Atlan chose the Rock as the location for a photo shoot with local photographer Stephen Ignacio that she will use for her new project.
