Jul 13 - Bayside And Westside Drama Group Wins Several Awards At Kent Festival

Bayside and Westside Drama Group have returned from the United Kingdom with an impressive haul of trophies after taking part in the Duncan Rand Youth One-Act Play Festival, held at Medway Little Theatre in Rochester (Kent).

The group came second in the Best Production category for their play Utrecht, missing out on the top prize by one point. In addition, the group also picked up four individual acting awards, more than any other group taking part in the Festival. Lauren McCann won the award for Best Actress for her performance in the group’s second play To Touch the Face of God, while Marco De La Chica, who played the Leader of the Opposition in Utrecht, won Best Supporting Actor. Carmen Anderson supplemented the Best Actress Award she won at the 2015 Gibraltar Drama Festival last March by winning Best Actress in a Minor Role for her performance in To Touch The Face of God, and Ethan Rocca picked up the male award for the same category. Finally, Maddie Carreras’ impressive handling of her duties as stage manager saw her pick up the Festival’s award for Best Backstage Crew. Actors Zane Alecio and Sarah Reilly also received Certificates of Merit.

This continues the group’s impressive run at this Festival, where they have now come second on three occasions. Utrecht also came second at the 2015 Gibraltar Drama Festival, and the group have now won twenty-six awards since 2012, both in Gibraltar and in the UK. The young actors will now be taking a break over the summer before resuming their weekly workshops at Bayside School in September.

The group would like to thank both the Ministry of Culture and Gibraltar Cultural Services for their support of this project, including financial assistance to provide these young people with this opportunity to represent Gibraltar overseas.

For his part, the Minister for Culture, Steven Linares, congratulated the group on its success.
