Apr 20 - SDGG Fully Supports ‘In’ Campaign
The Self Determination for Gibraltar Group (SDGG) has said that it fully supports the campaign for Gibraltar to remain in the European Union.
The group says that Gibraltarians will recall how the United Kingdom refused to give locals the vote for European elections and that it took a petition from Denise Matthews to the European Court of Human Rights and a long and drawn-out legal battle before Gibraltar achieved the right to vote. As a result, says the SDGG, Gibraltar now has a number of Members of the European Parliament who defend the Rock’s rights in Europe because Gibraltar forms part of their constituency.
A statement continued: “More importantly, Gibraltar derives benefits from our membership of the EU including freedom of movement , goods and people, passporting into the EU and funding for certain projects, all of which help to keep our economy buoyant.
“With a high turnout and a massive ‘IN’ vote we will demonstrate to the UK that Gibraltar wishes to remain a part of the European Union. At the very least this should strengthen our position with the UK in the event of a Brexit.
“The SDGG therefore urges support for the Gibraltar Stronger In Europe campaign and calls on all clubs and other representative organisations and associations who share our view (that an exit from the EU would have disastrous consequences for Gibraltar) to encourage their members to vote on the 23rd June for Gibraltar to remain in the EU.”
