Jun 07 - Faroe Island Ministers Visit Gibraltar

The Faroe Islands’ Parliamentary Finance Committee are currently on the Rock on a fact-finding visit to find out how Gibraltar works politically, economically and the links with the United Kingdom and the European Union.

Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia welcomed the committee at No6 this morning.

Dr Garcia added: “As you know, I myself am a fan of small states and systems of Government, and how different political systems work in different parts of Europe, and it is very interesting to exchange information with our friends here from the parliament of the Faroe Islands.”

He drew a comparison between the two nations, including the fact that they are both surrounded by the sea and have a thriving tourist industry.

Ruth Wang, the Chairman of the Finance Committee, said: “We are small in size, Gibraltar and the Faroe Islands, we are few in numbers, and we ourselves tend to copy systems and solutions intended for much larger populations and that is not always wise or possible, and that is why we need to think for ourselves and see how other societies with similar conditions organise themselves.”

The delegation is also due to meet with the Minister for Financial Services Albert Isola, Joe Bossano, Minister for Economic Development and the Leader of the Opposition, Daniel Feetham, as well as the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo at a reception which will be held tonight.
