Sep 16 – Hassan Nahon Demands Public Apology From Licudi

Independent MP Marlene Hassan Nahon has demanded a public apology after a heated parliamentary exchange with Minister Gilbert Licudi during which he reportedly used “shocking and abusive” language.

A statement from Ms Hassan Nahon continued: “Get your f****** facts right!” Those were the words of Education and Justice Minister Gilbert Licudi in Parliament to me, purely in reaction to me doing my job and holding him to account on the question of school lunches.

“Minister Licudi’s shocking and abusive language is not becoming of a statesman and is incompatible with a government which has introduced anti bullying legislation in the workplace. It demonstrates he is clearly out of control.

“The Minister’s parliamentary colleagues have sometimes disagreed with me in the past but have always done so with dignity and respect, and this language and treatment is thoroughly unacceptable in a chamber which should be setting high standards of conduct as an example for the community to follow. Gibraltar deserves better than hearing that our parliamentarians have forgotten about common decency and good manners.

“If the minister behaves in this way towards a fellow MP who is simply doing her job, I pity the poor souls who have to work under him in his ministerial departments.

“I expect a public apology from Minister Licudi and trust that the Chief Minister will advise his Cabinet about how they are expected to conduct themselves in the House. I will also be lodging a formal complaint about the incident and look forward to the Speaker taking appropriate action in order to protect the integrity of our parliament.”
