Oct 31 - GSD "Astonished" By Lack Of Government Drugs Misuse And Rehab Strategy

On the 28 June 2013 the Government announced with much fanfare the establishment of a Inter Ministerial Committee to address Gibraltar's drugs problem.

On the GSLP's reelection to Government on 26 November 2016, the Chief Minister took the view that, in the allocation of responsibilities, the Chief Minister should head and take forward the Government's policy on drugs and rehabilitation.

On the recent cabinet reshuffle the Chief Minister lamented that he was relinquishing control of this serious responsibility to Minister Samantha Sacramento given that his focus was on Brexit.

This week in Parliament the CM announced the creation of yet another Inter Ministerial Committee which will be chaired by the Chief Minister.

On the reconstitution of the Committee Shadow Justice Minister, Elliott Phillips said: "It is deeply disappointing that the Government fails to proactively develop a strategy on drugs and their misuse.

"The creation of committee  after committee without setting out detailed terms of reference and strategy demonstrates that the Government are neglecting a serious issue within our community.

"Instead the Government wishes to play the blame game and not address the serious concerns of many in or community about the misuse of drugs and their destructive effect on family life. Our drugs policy requires strong, dedicated and focused leadership."
