Jan 16 - Picardo Highlights ‘Smart Government’ at BVI Conference

picardoChief Minister Fabian Picardo yesterday addressed a Business Outlook Conference hosted by the premier of the British Virgin Islands, where he is currently visiting. Speaking as one of the head speakers on ‘ Smart Government – Critical to the Global Competitiveness of Small territories’ Picardo stressed the importance of modernising administrations in terms of both technology and attitude. He explained his e-government platform that is set to be launched imminently. This will serve to make Government services more accessible and information more readily available.

Mr Picardo also announced that his government will shortly introduce a new identity card which will be allow for even greater e-government applications to be accessible to citizens. He also touched on Gibraltar’s Civil Service Review and the proposed changes to Civil Servants’ working hours.

Following on from a meeting held last year between Mr Picardo and the heads of Government for Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands and other UK Overseas Territories, Picardo met once more with Dr Orlando Smith of the British Virgin Islands and L Craig Cannonier of Bermuda, to discuss matters of interest.

Mr. Picardo further highlighted to the men that each of the Territories are world leaders in diverse fields including captive insurance, company registration and the incorporation of Hedge Funds. The men, along with the heads of other Overseas Territories, agreed to meet more regularly.
