Mar 14 - Government Claims Leader Of The Opposition “Shows His True Colours” In Email To GSD Members
The Government has claimed that, in an email communication to members of the GSD, the Leader of the Opposition has set out a number of “incorrect and untrue propositions”, many of which the Government says it has already previously corrected. Despite this, says Number 6, Mr Feetham again appears to believe that if he “repeats his lies often enough people will believe him.”
The Government statement continues:
In this respect, we should draw people’s attention to a new lie being propagated by Mr Feetham to everyone on the GSD distribution list. Amongst other untruths set out by Mr Feetham, he says the following:
"It might surprise some of you that as Leader of the Opposition I am not officially invited to the football matches of our national team because the GFA extends invitations only to those on a list provided by No 6 Convent Place. This is the explanation afforded to Edwin Reyes when he has raised the matter."
Quite simply, this is untrue – and Mr Feetham knows it.
The fact of the matter is that the Government does not determine who the GFA invites to football matches. Historically, the position has been that official guests at matches were: the current Chief Minister, the current Minister for Sport and the current Shadow Minister for Sport.
The GSD were satisfied with this arrangement when they were in Government. Indeed, the GSD actually changed all methodology of invitation by the Government when they were elected in 1996 to exclude the opposition from many functions. Mr Feetham should not feel hard-done-by when the rules GSD approved of in their time in office are applied to his party. It is hypocritical for him to take umbrage at the application of rules which have not in any way been changed by the current administration.
Indeed, if Mr Feetham is so keen to support the GFA, he might wish to pay for a £15 ticket and help them raise funds in that way, instead of griping about not getting an official invite.
This is a relatively minor matter but one that perfectly shows the GSD in its true colours.
