Apr 10 - Opposition Concerned Over On-going Public Issues

gsdThe Opposition has today noted that following the success of it’s actions in canvassing opinion and raising issues directly with the people of Gibraltar, it will continue to engage with the people of Gibraltar ‘in order to fully understand the issues that concern our community’.

They added, ‘If the Government finds this participative style of politics, listening to the people, in any way offensive it says more about the attitude of Government towards the electorate than that of the Opposition.’

The party has claimed that Gibraltar is confronted by some huge issues at the moment, they noted that the public finances are still in a ruinous state as the Government is undertaking huge spending, using savers money to fund electoral commitments. The GSD estimates that the current expenditure is projected to increase by £66.6 million a year by the end of March 2014, from its position in March 2012.

The party added, ‘Worryingly there has been no inward investment of any note since the Government got elected and relations with Spain are at an absolute low, something which whilst not entirely of the Government’s own making, has undoubtedly not been handled well by the Chief Minister and, indeed, probably made worse through his injudicious actions and comments. The Government has utterly failed to address any of this and seems incapable of engaging in positive politics. The reckless actions of the Chief Minister are a major cause of concern to the future stability of this community. Mr Picardo therefore should concentrate less on the photo opportunity created by his overseas trips and more on making sure that people are safe and secure.

‘The Opposition will continue to engage and challenge the Government's record on these issues but will remain alert to those other local issues which affect particular areas of Gibraltar and to which we (and the public) attach great importance.’
