Sep 11 - Preparatory Works For Lift Installation At Parliament

There will be no meeting of Parliament in September in order to allow preparatory works and intrusive investigation for the installation of a lift.

This investigation will determine whether the lift could be internal or whether it has to be external.

The refurbishment of Parliament has been carried out in a number of phases. The first phase saw the overhaul of the Parliament Chamber itself with the provision of new furnishings, a new digital sound system and cameras to allow for meetings to be televised.

The second phase of this programme was the refurbishment of the offices for the Speaker, Clerk and staff of the Parliament building.

The third stage of this reform now involves the installation of a lift in order to provide disabled persons with mobility problems with access into the Parliament Chamber.
