Oct 13 – Gibraltar War Memorial Unveiled In Staffordshire
A Gibraltar War Memorial sculpted out of limestone from the east side of the Rock was unveiled this afternoon at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire.
The memorial was designed by Anselmo Torres but the project was the brainchild of Joe Brugada. The chunk of limestone was extracted by professional stonemasons earlier this year and flown by the RAF to Norfolk where the craftsmen managed to execute Anselmo’s design which represents the Rock as it was in prehistoric times.
Minister Neil F Costa, speaking at a service to dedicate the memorial to all the Gibraltarians who lost their lives in both World Wars, said: “For Gibraltarians who have made the ultimate sacrifice, their names will always be remembered here, their names carved forever into a part of their homeland.”
Former Governors Sir Adrian Johns and Sir James Dutton also spoke during the short ceremony.
Sir James noted that the Gibraltarians who had fought during both World Wars had volunteered to do so and those who had died had done so performing selfless acts of courage.
