Mar 02 - Eurocity Plans Deferred By DPC
Plans to build more than four hundred apartments at the Eurocity development adjacent to Eurotowers were deferred by the Development and Planning Commission.
At a meeting held yesterday, the Commission concluded the meeting by telling developers to take on board any comments made during the meeting and to come back with revised plans.
Plans for the £100million development include 400 apartments, of which 300 will be studio flats and one-bedroom apartments, 600 car parking spaces, boutique office and retail areas, an amenity area, public access via the development, a spa and health club as well as a top floor swimming pool.
Developers assured the DPC that the “affordable” homes are targeted at people who currently work in Gibraltar and live in Spain, ensuring they can spend more time on the Rock.
Residents living in Edinburgh Estate and Chilton Court raised objections to the development, stating that the buildings would reduce the natural sunlight enjoyed by their properties and that their views will also be lost.
A spokesman for the Environmental Safety Group asked the DPC to consider this planning application carefully as it feels it needs to safeguard the environment and the quality of life of the residents living in the vicinity, adding that common sense should prevail in light of other construction already taking place in a busy area.
The DPC said this was an impressive plan, but decided to defer the proposal until their next meeting, saying more work was needed before a final development is prepared, highlighting the issue of traffic and the problem of daylight in the area that needs to be addressed.
The DPC also encouraged the objectors and developers to meet and discuss issues, which may help towards refining the development.
