Jul 19 - Success At First Gibraltar Women's Association Drop-In Clinic

The Gibraltar Women’s Association is delighted with the success of its first drop in clinic held on the 29th June at John Mackintosh Hall where a number of issues were raised by those who attended.

They were:

Childcare

The need to support working parents especially families whose children are too old for nursery but too young to be home alone. This can cause significant stress to parents particularly mothers who traditionally take on this role upon themselves but who also want the freedom to pursue their career or need to for financial reasons. Consequently, mental health can be adversely affected and the whole family suffers.

Nutritional health for children.

The obesity problem affects many of Gibraltar’s children and there is a need to tackle this at grass roots with health campaigns and healthy eating. The Government of Gibraltar have a manifesto commitment to provide school lunches and this would be a great opportunity to introduce children to healthy eating and looking after their bodies. Healthy school lunches may sometimes be the only nutritional meal a child will have in the whole day.

The committee believes that these matters are very important and will be working with the community and ministers on projects to ensure improvements in these areas. The drop-ins are an opportunity for both GWA members and members of the community to meet with the committee and chat informally on issues that they may wish raised by the GWA or community projects that they think the GWA could be involved in. At the same time the committee can update members on current projects in a clear and transparent manner.

The drop-in clinics are held at the John Mackintosh Hall Studio from 6pm to 8pm. The next few confirmed dates are 27th September, 25th October, 29th November.

The GWA committee looks forward to continue working with, and for, the community.
