Feb 07 – New Officer Joins The Royal Gibraltar Regiment

On 16 December last year, The Royal Gibraltar Regiment welcomed its newest officer into their ranks at a ceremony at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Surrey.

The Sovereign’s parade marks the passing out of Officer Cadets from Sandhurst and, after 44 weeks of intensive physical and academic studies, Second Lieutenant Matt Lewis marched up the steps of Old College and became an Officer in the Royal Gibraltar Regiment.

2Lt Matt Lewis was born in London, but grew up in Spain in Aracena, Huelva. After studying a Masters in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Liverpool, he worked designing radars, in nuclear engineering, as a teacher in Madrid and on farms and hostels throughout Europe as he travelled around for two years. He finally made his way to Sandhurst after living in Israel for a few months.

After the ceremony, 2Lt Lewis said: "Sandhurst is a busy year I'll never forget. Especially boxing for the intake, adventure training in Corsica, exercises in the UK and Germany and more than anything, the platoon of characters I trained with for 44 weeks. More importantly, the Platoon Commanders Battle Course at Brecon was where the ins and outs of leading an infantry platoon were drilled into the intake until it became second nature. I'm proud to finally take over a platoon in the Gibraltar Regiment, and I look forwards to getting them ready for the challenges that lay ahead."

Matt is keen on Boxing and Snowboarding, and is looking to do more of these throughout his career with the Royal Gibraltar Regiment.
