Jul 25 - Beach Recycling Bins Installed

Recycling bins have now been installed at all beaches. This initiative forms part of the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Climate Change’s drive to increase recycling rates and also reduce littering on beaches.

26 recycling units have been deployed across six beaches. Each recycling unit contains 4 bins:

  • -  Yellow: for plastics, cans and tetra brik containers

  • -  Green: for glass

  • -  Blue: for paper and cardboard

  • -  Black: for other general waste

A Government statement continued: “Litter on beaches is a significant environmental problem. It can cause injuries to people on land and, if blown into the sea, becomes marine litter. Marine litter is one of the deadliest killers of marine wildlife, the largest polluter of our oceans and the quietest growing threat to human health.

“Officers from the DEHECC will be visiting all beaches over the coming days to provide further information and advice on marine litter and how it can be tackled. It asks beach users to support this campaign for a cleaner environment by ensuring they collect all their rubbish up at the end of the day and dispose of it correctly in the bins provided. The bins are being serviced daily and beach users are reminded that additional, larger recycling bins as well as general waste bins are also available on all beaches, should the smaller units be full.”
