Nov 27 - Gibraltar Stock Exchange Hosts Professional Blockchain Educational Workshop

The Gibraltar Stock Exchange Group (GSXG), geared towards establishing a trusted financial services group for the new digital era, hosted Gibraltar’s first professional Blockchain Educational Workshop on Monday, 19th November.

The GSX Group’s Blockchain Innovation Centre (BIC) hosted the full-day event in collaboration with the University of Gibraltar and London Blockchain Labs (LBL).

Nick Cowan, Managing Director and Founder of GSX Limited, said, “Working in partnership with other recognised and established industry leaders, including the University of Gibraltar and London Blockchain Labs, captures the spirit of collaboration at the heart of this ongoing blockchain revolution. This is part of the GSX Group’s mission to help add value to the growing local blockchain economy. The continued work of the BIC in this area will serve to increase our collective knowledge and strengthen the growing blockchain community here”.

The BIC workshop was divided into six different seminars each led by expert figures from within the ever-evolving blockchain ecosystem such as Isaac Sultan (LBL Smart Contracts Developer), Federico Rocchi (LBL Director of Business Development), Dr Enrico Rossi (LSE Fellow: Information Systems and Innovation Faculty), and Ilya Kleyner (LBL Executive Director).

The sessions included an introduction to blockchain and the blockchain ecosystem; in-depth discussions on Ethereum, smart contracts, and understanding Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs); the regulatory landscape; and, finally, the many use cases of blockchain technology.

Ilya Kelner from London Blockchain Labs (LBL) said, “Gibraltar is leading the way with its approach to regulating the DLT space, and it was a pleasure to contribute to the education of the financiers and entrepreneurs who will be driving DLT adoption in the coming months and years. With the amazing support of the GSX Group, the University of Gibraltar and the engaging and inquisitive audience, the LBL team felt able to guide the attendees through the core cryptographic and economic concepts underpinning blockchain technology, as well as the developing business and regulatory ecosystems, and empower them to become active contributors to the Gibraltarian DLT space.”

Nadine Collado, Director of Professional Development and Short Courses for the University of Gibraltar, said, “The Blockchain Educational workshop has been very well received by the delegates with positive feedback received and enquiries for further workshops. London Blockchain Labs expert speakers presented a dynamic and informative delivery into the Blockchain ecosystem, Bitcoin, smart contracts, ICO’s and international regulatory issues. Together with BIC we shall continue to provide further educational workshops.”

The BIC is an education-focused network created by the Gibraltar Stock Exchange to support the growth of an industry workforce in Gibraltar for the new digital era. The BIC works to connect Gibraltar to the world of blockchain technology, striking up partnerships with local and international startup hubs, universities, and industry associations. Through these partnerships, the GSX Group aims to facilitate the jurisdiction’s aim to facilitate breakthroughs within the global blockchain community.

Denise Matthews, Operations Director of the BIC added, “It has been a fantastic experience for all involved today. There is a real hunger amongst the local workforce to better understand blockchain technology and its applications, and this sell-out inaugural event is a testament to that. Gibraltar has truly embraced DLT, with everyone from the Government, to the University, to local professionals showing an enthusiasm and desire to learn about and implement blockchain technology. Having London Blockchain Labs onboard was always going to be a significant coup, but we cannot underestimate the draw that Gibraltar as a jurisdiction, and the GSX Group itself, has for participants within the blockchain industry.”
