Jan 07 - Free Lecture Next Week: Philosophy And The American Civil War - Catalyst Or Cataclysm?

The Gibraltar Philosophical Society kickstarts its activity for 2019 with a free public lecture next week.

On Wednesday 16^th of January at 7pm at the Charles Hunt Room in the John Mackintosh Hall, David Sanchez will deliver a talk entitled: “Philosophy And The American Civil War - Catalyst Or Cataclysm?”

The lecture will explore the philosophical motivations behind the causes of the American Civil war, beginning by mapping out the enlightenment philosophies on which the United States was founded and how these served to create inherent contradictions that made Civil War a certainty.

Following this the confluence of competing economic, social and political philosophy during the conflict will be analysed to show how they affected the causes and dynamic of a war that forced the United States to examine its philosophical conscience under the lens of the central concept of individual freedom.  

The lecture is free and anyone who is interested is most welcome to attend.
