Vehicle Fire In Devil’s Tower Road Car Park

The GFRS Emergency Control Room received a call this morning at 07:49hrs from a member of the public informing of a fire at Devil’s Tower Road Car Park.

Two fire appliances were dispatched and 8 fire-fighters and arrived on scene at 7:53am. The Airport Fire & Rescue Service had also spotted the fire from their location and made their way via the airport to assist with their monitor. The vehicle on fire was located on the top floor of the car park in open air and was well alight. The GFRS made use of the Dry Riser installation in the car park to connect hose and extinguish the fire with the use of a water jet. The fire was fully extinguished within 15minutes of arrival at the scene.

The GFRS Fire investigation team and RGP Scenes of Crimes Officers are currently investigating the fire. The vehicle was a seven seater Renault Espace and the fire seemed to have started inside the seating area.

The GFRS says it is aware of concerns from members of the public, as there have been a number of notable fires recently that have been covered by the local press and social media. The GFRS is thankful to the prompt response from members of the public in reporting such fires that result in early intervention and prevent the fires from spreading further.

A spokesperson said: “All fires are investigated to establish the exact location of where the fires started, how they spread and the probable causes. At the moment there is no correlation between these recent fires. There have also been a couple of fires in flats involving cooking pots left unattended. The GFRS is also advising the public to be fully aware of fire prevention and safety measures whether this relates to cooking activities, smoking materials, use of candles or use of electrical equipment and vehicles. Further fire safety information can be found on the GFRS website www.gibfire.gi under the Fire Safety / Community Safety section.”
